About

My name is Alex, I am a Network Security Engineer in Lincoln Nebraska. I first become interested in radios and how they worked at age 15 when I was asked to be the radio operator on a small sailing vessel with a youth program I was involved in. The first step was to get my Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.

I joined the United States Navy in 1985 and went to Radioman “A” School in San Diego California. I served in the Navy and Navy Reserve until 1993 and had the pleasure to work and learn at very interesting Communication Stations in Maine, Texas, Hawaii, and Western Australia.

I always had an interest in Amateur Radio but had no desire in learning CW. When I found out that CW was no longer a requirement, I spent a couple weeks studying and received my Technician license in July 2015. Before working on my upgrade, I set out to learn about the various modes and uses of the HF bands and researched various rigs and antennas that I could use in my HOA neighborhood. I purchased my first HF rig and upgraded my license to General in September 2017.

My current antenna is an end-fed halfwave wire that runs about 3/4 the way around the perimeter of my roof (yes, laying directly on the shingles). It works pretty well, but I am continuing to learn about other antenna options that I might be able to get away within a restricted HOA.

I enjoy using various digital modes and voice. I also enjoy serving my community as a Storm Spotter. The Lancaster County Storm Spotting program is very well organized and was developed by Reynolds Davis (K0GND) and primarily manned by members of the Lincoln Amateur Radio Club (K0KKV).

I upload logs daily to LoTW (preferred) and eQSL and QRZ.
